K.Lumpur - National Planetarium


National Planetarium (Planetarium Negara), a blue-domed structure, is situated atop a hill in KL Lake Gardens at Jalan Perdana. www.viewmalaysia.com

This 32 acres National Planetarium is owned by Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Malaysia. The area of the building is about 120,000 square feet.

Its attractions include the space theatre which screens space shows and movies. You will know more about the space here.

In the main hall are permanent exhibits related to space science. Among them is Arianne IV space engine - one of the engines used to launch MEASAT 1, Malaysia's first satellite into space.

K.Lumpur - National Zoo



The National Zoo located thirteen kilometers north-east of Kuala Lumpur. Laid out around a central lake the zoo houses a collection of Fauna and Flora native to Malaysia as well as from other parts of the globe.

The National Zoo houses hundreds of different species of animals, birds and reptiles. The aquarium has an extensive collection of marine and fresh-water life. Within the extensive grounds is an area for sea lions where visitors can see them being most active during feeding time.


There are elephant rides and other amusements for the young at heart. There are also train rides for children. Though a good zoo by Asian standards some enclosures are cramped despite all the open space.

K.Lumpur - National Theatre

The National Theatre, completed in May 1999, is a 'lyrical theatre of the 21st century'. It is situated at the junction of Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Kuantan.

In 1964, a proposal to establish a National Cultural Centre was submitted to both the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Culture and Social Welfare.

The project gathered momentum following the National Cultural Congress in 1971. In 1994, with the release of the financial allocation and building plan, a ground breaking ceremony was officiated by the Prime Minister YAB Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed.

Construction work began in 1995, and three years later, the National Theatre was relocated to its new premises on Jalan Tun Razak.

In May 1995, the Theatre had its own logo. The Istana Budaya complex itself, which incorporates the National Theatre, was officially opened by the Prime Minister on September 15, 1999.

The National Theatre is proud to be considered as the first theatre in Asia to have the most advanced mechanism for stage performances. It also the top 10 of the most advanced theatre in the world and at par with the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The National Theatre has been a dream for the performing arts community of Malaysia for more than two decades. It is responsible for the development of all forms of theatrical art in Malaysia. It is also the permanent home of the National Theatre Company and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Designed as a functional building which not only reflects the beauty of form, the National Theatre is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment while still retaining the national heritage and traditional Malay design such as sirih junjung, wau bulan and others.

K.Lumpur - National Science Center

Perched atop a hill on 8 hectares of landscaped grounds, the National Science Centre is located atop a hill in Bukit Kiara on the northwestern fringes of Kuala Lumpur.

The National Science Centre was established in 1996 to promote greater understanding and interest in science and technology. It provides an aptly futuristic setting for nine galleries depicting various scientific exhibitions.

A fusion of modern architecture with Islamic design, a space theme park at the National Science Center presents a Space Science Show and Sky Movie on a 20m diameter dome screen. It is designed in the shape of a cone with its top removed and the whole structure is covered with a huge geodesic dome.

The journey into this futuristic four-storey complex begins with a walk through an overhead tropical freshwater aquarium, followed by the Environmental Odyssey unravelling the threats faced by our tropical environment.

It is equipped with an Intelligent Building Automation System and its exhibition gallery occupies two floors with a total area of 6,717.6 square metres. It includes a multimedia library, lecture theatre, multi-purpose hall and cafeteria.

Among the fascinating themes featured in the exhibition galleries are an environmental odyssey, pathways to discovery, future world and thinking machines.

Children will find delight in the Children's Exploration Centre. There are also observatory with a 14-inch telescope and viewing gallery with binoculars

K.Lumpur - National Museum

Located on the fringe of Taman Tasik Perdana (the Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens), top a hill at Jalan Travers, the National Museum is the principal museum in the country.

This palatial building was designed based on classical Malay architecture. It was set up in 1963 to serve as a repository of Malaysia's rich cultural heritage and as the centre for imparting knowledge on the country's historical past.

It consist of a large central main entrance hall that is flanked by two exhibition wings. The two large murals on the exterior of the exhibition wings depicts scenes of the country - the mural on the rights depicts the culture and customs of Malaysian while the one on the left chronicals the historical episodes of the nations.

Enter the vast building through its imposing entrance and you will find an impressive collection of artifacts on local history, culture and customs, art and handicraft, economic activities, flora and fauna, weapons and currencies.

The various galleries housed within the Museum provide interesting insights into the country's development - Historical Gallery, Cultural Gallery, Metalworks and Musical Instrument Gallery, National Sports Gallery and the National History Gallery.

The Historical Gallery traces the different periods in the history of Peninsular Malaysia. The Cultural Gallery is a collection of various aspects of the Malaysian culture, from common everyday pastimes to important ceremonial customs. The Metalwork and Musical Instruments Gallery showcases various objects and utensils from kitchenware and ceremonial ornaments to weapons and traditional instruments of Malaysian music.

Apart from the permanent exhibits, the musueum also holds regular thematic exhibitions, most noteably its Treasures from the Graves, Enduring Beauty and World of Ghosts exhibits that drawn large crowd of curious visitors.

Facilities include a conservation laboratory, a library with more than 6,500 titles catering to researchers, students and individuals in the field of archaeology, ethnology, natural history and other similar disciplines, and a photographic studio containing slides and negatives on various subjects of interest to the museum.

K.Lumpur - National Mosque

The National Mosque is Malaysia's principal mosque and one of the most prominent buildings in the city. It is located near the railway station, along Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin.www.viewmalaysia.com

K.Lumpur - National Monument


As you travel along Jalan Parlimen and towards the Lake Gardens, close to Parliment House stands the National Monument or Tugu Negara.

It is a great bronze sculpture erected to commemorate the soldiers who gave up their lives in the triumph during World War II and the Emergency (1948-60).
.
It was designed by the famous sculptor, Felix de Weldon, who also designed the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington. The 15.54 metre high bronze monument depicts seven soldiers symbolising the seven qualities of leadership.
.
The seven men from the Malaysian Armed Forces holding the national flag, each symbolising one of seven qualities: leadership, unity, strength, vigilance, suffering, courage and sacrifice.
.
It is one of the largest freestanding sculptures in the world. In honour of the nation's heroes, the "last post" is sounded every Saturday from 6.00 p.m.to 6.10 p.m. (except on public holidays).
.
Beside the National Monument are the ASEAN Gardens and the Memorial Tun Razak, which houses memorabilia of Malaysia's second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

Asean Sculpture Garden

K.Lumpur - National Art Gallery

.The National Art Gallery is located within the premises of the former Majestic Hotel, along Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin overlooking the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station.

The National Art Gallery is flanked by the National Theatre and the National Library. It is housed in a 1932 building which is conserved under the National Heritage Trust.

The building's unique structure, combining a blend of slate, tinted glass and a striking metallic roof, houses five galleries including a creative gallery and workshop, a resource centre, an auditorium and the gallery's administrative centre.

The new art gallery building combines traditional design with modern lines much like many of the new Malaysian buildings put up over the last two decades beginning with the Dayabumi Complex.

Built with aesthetics and functionality in mind, the art gallery creates a space for the preservation, development, exploration and experimentation of the various facts of art in Malaysia. It is a centre for cultural items, art and crafts.

There are a number of galleries housing various permanent and temporary exhibitions. It showcases the works of contemporary artists, and a permanent collection of works of local and foreign origin are also displayed. Its collection now numbers over 2,500 pieces.

The gallery holds a variety of exhibitions and educational programs. There are always art competitions, seminars and workshops held here. The building also used to be a popular hotel during the colonial days.

K.Lumpur - KL Tower

K.Lumpur - Merdeka Square

Facing the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is Dataran Merdeka or Merdeka Square, an immaculately-turfed 8.2 hectare area of historical interest.

A 100 metre-high flagpole rising from Merdeka Square is the tallest in the world, and marks the spot where the Malayan Flag was hoisted on August 31, 1957 signifying the independence of the country from British rule.

You may able to see the Malaysian Armed Forces and Royal Malaysian Police bands take turns to perform at the square every third Saturday of the month from 5pm to 6pm.

The Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square), a field fronting the Royal Selangor Club, resounded to the cries of "Merdeka" on that night and Malaysias converge on the square each year to relive the moment the country gained its independence.
.
Formerly known as the Padang, the field was extensively used for cricket, hockey, tennis and rugby matches until the mid-nineties when the whole area was rebuilt to accommodate an underground parking lot and shopping, restaurant, complex. Today, it is still used for cricket matches.

The Tudor-style Royal Selangor Club built in 1910 rests on one corner of the square, where KL's elites meet. You may see a large video screen displaying religious messages and advertisements here.

The Club served as a social centre for Kuala Lumpur¡¦s British residents; its doors are now open to anyone who can afford the membership fees. In keeping with die-hard customs women are still not allowed entry to the bar, except by invitation.

Located at Jalan Perdana, Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens (Taman Tasik Perdana) dates to the 1880s and is the city's most popular park.

K.Lumpur - Istana Negara

The Istana Negara is the official residence of His Majesty, the Yang di Pertuan Agong, the King of Malaysia. It is located on a hillock at Jalan lstana, just outside the city centre. www.viewmalaysia.com
It stands on a 28-acre (11 hectare) area. The Istana was originally a double storey mansion built in 1928 by a local Chinese millionaire, Chan Wing.

Balairong Seri is a hall located in the East Wing. It is only used for official and customary functions. It sometimes serves as a banquet hall.

K.Lumpur - Eye On Malaysia

The Eye on Malaysia, the largest portable ‘observation wheel’ in the world, was unveiled by the Hon. Prime Minister of Malaysia on 6 January 2006 in conjunction with the grand launch of the Visit Malaysia Year 2007 celebration.

This giant ferris wheel allows visitors to experience a 360-degree panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur during a 12-minute ride that goes 60 metres high. It offers a magnificent view of Kuala Lumpur and over 20 kilometres of its surroundings including KL Tower, Istana Budaya and Petronas Twin Towers.

Similar in concept and style to the famous London Eye, the specially commissioned Eye on Malaysia is expected to be a hit among locals and tourists. There are a total of 42 gondolas comprising 39 units for the public, one for VIPs and two for disabled passengers. Each of the gondola can carry eight persons.

The Swiss technology used to make the giant wheel is the result of a strategic partnership between a Malaysian company, MST AD Suria Sdn Bhd, and an Australian enterprise.

Tickets are available at the sales counter in the Titiwangsa Lake Gardens. It costs RM15 for adults and RM8 for children aged 3 to 12 and senior citizens. The operating hours for the ferris wheel are from 10am to 10pm daily.

Titiwangsa Lake Gardens will be transformed into an audio-visual wonderland as four of the world’s largest and most high-tech water screens will show the faces and images of Malaysia combined with a fireworks display.

The International WaterSky Spectacular runs at night with exciting shows commencing at 8pm daily. It features jet and water ski stunts and close proximity pyrotechnics to create a truly spectacular experience.

Don’t forget to catch the ‘Theatre of the Waters’ premiere on 1 February 2007 and will continue to be screened each night throughout the year. Meantime, the ‘Art of Fireworks’ show runs every night from Saturday 6 January to Saturday 3 February 2007.

K.Lumpur - Deer Park

Located in the undulating slopes and sprawling valley of the Lake Gardens. The authorities have dedicated a spot known as the Kuala Lumpur Deer Park to these gentle, intelligent creatures.

A well-chosen peaceful area that is more than 2ha in size has been turned into a suitable habitat for the deer. It is interesting to see hinds, does and fawns, representing some of the smaller species, roaming freely in the sprawling valley.

Perhaps Malaysia most famous deer, the rainforest mousedeer or kancil, can be seen here. The mousedeer is the world's smallest hoofed animal and a popular figure in local folklore due to its legendary wit. The Deer Park is a beautiful spot where the landscaping has been well thought out and lush trees and shrubs planted to ensure that the habitat is cooling and peaceful. There are also ponds around the park.

Visitors are allowed to mingle with these friendly and adorable deers. Much to visitor's delight, these friendly deer will usually come close to be fed as you watch them.

Central Market

The Central Market is just a stone's throw from Klang Bus Station and is situated immediately behind the Dayabumi building. Spend a morning wondering through what was once a busy 'wet market'!

This pre-war building was the principal wet market for Kuala Lumpur in earlier years. It was extensively renovated in the early 1980's and redesignated as an arts and cultural centre.

Since being given a new lease of life, the Central Market has become the favourite place for local artists to demonstrate thier skills and display their work.

There are numerous shops and stalls housed in this heritage building will enchant tourists with their offerings such as antique clocks, jewellery, gems, woodcarvings, batik and pewterware. The stalls also sell an interesting range a bric-a-brac, souvenir items, handicrafts and Asian artifacts. Those with an eye for the unusual will enjoy buying or browsing through the market's extensive range of novelty items such as jade trees and blown glass souvenirs.

Central Market remains one of the best places in the city to watch cultural performances. An open air stage serves as the regular venue for traditional and contemporary dance as well as musical concerts.

Cultural performance such as Bangsawan (Malay Traditional Theatre), Wayang Kulit (Shadow Play), Chinese Opera, Nadagam (Indian Traditional Theatre) are held here during weekends. Performances are free and normally start at 7.45pm.

Here we can also see traditional items, handicraft making demonstrations such as tekat (gold embroidery), songket (gold brocade) batik, glass blowing, or have your portrait painted by one of the many talented artists the market.

You can simply relax at one of the many restaurants here with sample local or western food. Central Market open daily from 10am to 10pm. The admission is free.
